Tres Machina

Talking to @LisaRosen today I realized that I have a freaking appliance for nearly everything. And I still don't own a Kitchen Aid mixer, so there are definitely more machines to come in the future.

I was flipping through my Elle Decor book that my fantastic sister-in-law gave me and realized that the kitchens in there didn't have a single appliance on the counter. Where are these people keeping all their stuff?

Anyway, I'm wondering if all these machines are a good idea. I just bought a Sunbeam bread machine and I love it. But now I'm thinking I need a rice maker, too! Is it getting redundant? At one point I owned one pot, a pan, a 4-cup coffee maker, and only had a stove. Granted, it was lean times. But I didn't die of starvation and I got really good at reheating leftovers in the oven. So what is going on?

Here's what I have cooking for me around the kitchen:

  • Bread Machine
  • Coffee pot (I also have two French presses - a 1 cup and a 4 cup)
  • Blender
  • Food processor
  • Microwave
  • Hand-held mixer
  • Crock Pot
  • milk frother
  • Ice cream maker
  • Espresso maker
  • Microwave
  • Stir-crazy popcorn maker

What I'd like to add in the next year or so:

  • rice maker
  • Kitchen-Aid mixer
  • Pasta maker attachment for the mixer

I realize that many people have even more -- food dehydrators, rotisseries, etc.

Are we all insane or is all of this making us healthier with more free time? What do you all think?

  1. Ooh--excellent food for thought. In my case (& I have everything you mentioned, with a few variations), the "toys" definitely don't free up much time. I think they do make us healthier, because I want to stay home and play with my "toys" rather than eat out. But the real advantages are a)we eat really, really well--the gadgets enable/encourage me to try things I wouldn't otherwise, and those things are almost always delicious, and b)it's my hobby. I'm highly entertained, and that's important, too, right?

  2. Highly entertained is always at the top of my list. I also believe that any new endeavor should come with new gear or new outfit ...
